I have about 150 entries in the spreadsheet and it confirms an approximate correlation between serial numbers and dates-of-manufacture, so perhaps the barrel was not very big after all. Wherever the date of purchase is known, I also include this with the serial number. I keep a spreadsheet of Surfcaster serial numbers with associated body colors, logo colors, pickup configuration, 6- or 12-string configuration, etc. We imagine a large barrel of neck plates with serial numbers in the factory and employees selecting one at random each time they needed one. It seems there’s not an exact correlation. There are several discussion on this site about the correlation of serial numbers and dates-of-manufacture of Surfcasters. Played a B/W one today at the Las Vegas Guitar Center (my local one never has any in stock) and I was impressed.
